There’s a lot to consider when buying hiking footwear. Are sneakers enough, or should you invest in boots? Boots or trail runners? Gore‑Tex or leather? Do you need crampon compatibility?
For hiking in Ireland, I recommend a solid hiking boot with mid or high ankle support and a waterproof membrane like Gore‑Tex. This offers protection on uneven terrain and helps keep your feet dry in Ireland’s famously unpredictable weather. A good outsole like Contagrip or Vibram provides reliable grip on wet and rugged surfaces.
Trail runners can be great for lighter hikes or faster movement, but they typically lack ankle support and durability for rough terrain. That’s why I suggest starting with a boot. A boot opens up access to more mountains and tougher conditions. You can always add trail runners later.
Unfortunately, sneakers just don’t cut it. They lack proper support, toe protection, and grip and once they’re wet, they stay wet. In Ireland, soggy feet are a fast track to a miserable hike.
